iSpeedy- The Ultimate Garage Sale Advice

iSpeedy Garage Sale

Spring is here & garage sale season has begun!

Garage sales can be a treasure trove of good finds and great deals, if you know what to do. Below is a wealth of information to make your hunt much more successful. Enjoy!

  1. Make a list of things you need- Don't impulse shop just because the cost is cheap! You will spend additional money and clutter your home.
  2. Match your list with garage sale advertisements- Compare local newspaper listings, classified booklets, Craigslist.org, or Facebook garage sale groups for matching items at nearby locations. Don't hesitate to contact the seller if you need to inquire about a specific item.
  3. Map out a route- Map your sale route & keep the cost of gas in mind. Try going to the location where there are the most items first, or the furthest location and work your way back home.
  4. Check online prices for items on your list- Check out Craigslist, Amazon, or eBay for the current price of used items. This will help you determine a deal & help you negotiate. The last thing you want to do is pay more than necessary.
  5. Be prepared- Wear cool, comfortable clothes. Bring cash as most sellers don't take cards. Also, have shopping bags on hand & don't forget to empty your trunk before heading out.
  6. Be quick- Unless you're at the last garage sale of the day, be quick in order to cover all the sales on your route.
  7. Negotiate- Always ask politely for a cheaper price. Be careful, don't try to haggle on items that are already marked down drastically. Bundling is also a good strategy.
  8. Check what you buy- Carefully check items for hard to see tears, stains, chips, & breakage. When considering furniture, double check for mold.
  9. Too early or too late, both are fine- The best stuff is available at the start of the sale, but the best deals can be had later in the day when the seller wants to get rid of things quickly.
  10. Have a friend on standby- If you plan on purchasing heavy items like furniture, you might need help carrying items into your home.
  11. One weekend may not be enough- You may need to go out for a few weeks before checking off all of the items on your wish list. Try your luck in a different part of town the following week!
